Breast Lift Surgery

Many may perceive their breasts to hang low when they are perfectly normal. This is because magazines and social media can have an undue influence on people's perception of normality. Peter Callan

Breast lift

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, involves lifting, tightening and reshaping the breasts while keeping them the same size in a bra. Women whose breasts have sagged after breastfeeding or weight loss often undergo breast lift surgery. Occasionally younger females request the procedure because their breasts naturally sag low. If you feel your breasts are also too small in addition to being too low, you may wish to have an augmentation as well.

Your operation

Mr Callan performs all his surgery in state of the art facilities at St John of God Hospital in Geelong.

A breast lift involves making an incision around the areola (the coloured part around the nipple) and another vertical incision below that. In rare cases, a horizontal incision is made in the fold under the breast. The excess skin is removed and breast remoulded to an aesthetically pleasing shape. The surgery is almost identical to a breast reduction without the removal of tissue.

Breast lift surgery can be done as a day procedure. It is not a particularly painful procedure but can be a little uncomfortable for a couple of days. You will be given medication to keep you comfortable.

Your consultation

The procedure will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr Callan. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk through your reasons for surgery and the expectations you have about the result. The operation and any risks associated with surgery will also be discussed.

Your Results

Both breast position and nipple position will be altered by this surgery.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you are welcome to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified specialist.

Your recovery

Recovery time ranges from a few days to a few weeks.

You will recover more quickly if you limit activity. You can shower within hours of surgery as dressings are minimal. You must not drive until you are fully recovered from both the anaesthetic and the discomfort of surgery.

You will be given instructions on the purchase of a soft bra prior to surgery. This bra is important in the early postoperative period to help shape the breasts and keep discomfort to a minimum. After a couple of weeks you can wear any bra you choose.

The incision lines from the surgery are always there but they usually improve to the extent that they are not of great concern to most women. As a rule the incision lines are inconspicuous.
