Frequently Asked Questions

Peter Callan

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see Mr Callan?

This is recommended, although not always required. If your consult is for a medical reason then definitely yes. Purely cosmetic procedures generally do not require referrals. If you have a good relationship with your GP and are happy for him or her to know about your intentions, it is probably a good idea to get one anyway. That way your GP can be kept in the loop regarding any additional treatment or surgery you may undergo, and we think this is always a good idea.

How do I go about making an appointment?

Once you have a doctor’s referral or have decided you wish to see us, call our rooms on 5222-2440 to speak to Joyce, Jess, or one of our nurses who will make an appointment for you. If it is for a cosmetic reason , one of our nurses will speak with you either at the time of booking or call you afterwards. This is to introduce ourselves, confirm your reason for coming to see us and then send appropriate literature and costings for relevant surgery. We find if our patients have had some information before they come to see us, they are much better informed and get more benefit from the consult.

Once we have determined your requirements, we send out the relevant information, an introduction letter and a questionnaire. We ask you to complete all relevant forms prior to the appointment and send back in as soon as possible.

What does the surgery fee include?

Mr Callan’s fee includes the cost of your surgery and your post operative care for a minimum of one year for our cosmetic patients. Should you require immediate return to theatre for emergency reasons or revision for medical reasons this is usually covered in the initial fee.

What can I expect at an appointment?

Our appointments are designed to be all about our patients. We are here for you. We see our role as being able to provide you with information to help you make a decision that is right for you.

On the day Mr Callan will discuss what you are after, perform a physical examination, he will provide you with an honest assessment of your condition and discuss with you some options for treatment. We will talk with you about what you hope to achieve, your expectations and can show you photos of results in similar patients. There is no pressure to make decisions on the day.

Will I have scarring after (cosmetic) surgery?

All surgery results in incision lines which are usually inconspicuous and if possible we try to hide. The type of scar you form depends mainly upon the individual’s own healing properties. Certain skin types may form thicker scars and the area on the body can also be a predictor of scar visibility. You must consider when deciding whether or not to have surgery if the potential for scarring will affect your decision.

Do I need private health insurance?

Private health insurance is definitely recommended for all hospital procedures, but not essential. Health insurance can cover theatre and hospital expenses for surgeries that carry Medicare item numbers. For purely cosmetic procedures insurance may make little difference unless you have a problem which is unusual.

How long do I need to wait for an appointment?

As Mr Callan specialises in the face, our appointment waiting times are usually less than three weeks. Occasionally cancellations occur which will get you an earlier appointment.
